Melons

Cucurbitacee - Cucumis melo
In Italy the cultivation of melons covers around 18,000 hectares in open field and around 2,200 hectares in greenhouses.  The regions where melons are grown are Lombardy, Sicily, Emilia-Romagna, Puglia and Calabria.

Availability: all types and varieties for cultivation in greenhouses, tunnels and normal open field, for medium or long conservation.  There are various types: netted Italian with or without grooves for slices, monoic or andromonoic, smooth Charentais with grooves for slices, seni-netted Charentais with grooves for slices, wrinkly yellow melons, Amarillo and Galia melons.

Type of production: Standard plant, grafted plant, conventional or organically grown

Type of rootstock available: interspecific hybrid C. Maxima X C. Moscata, Cucumis melo

Type of graft: oblique cut

Containers and Holes available: plastic tray with 54 or 96 holes

Substrate available: pressed peat, soft peat.

Why graft melons: tolerance to soil-borne fungal diseases, increased size, increased yield, greater tolerance to cold, excellent vegetable strength
